in capitol heights, maryland are beside themselves with worriedy after the elderly nadir -- neighbor geraldine mcintire was murdered inside her home. >> it is scary. we have children and grandchildren. >> authorities say saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. they performed a welfare check on the home. that is when they found mcintyre suffering from upper body. she died a short time later. the first thing you notice is the land -- ramp. she had mobility issues. vulnerable to the overpowering evil us of violence. >> she was very nice. beautiful people, nice neighbors. >> detectives canvassed the community, handing out flyers and placing them under screen doors and windshields, anybody -- anywhere they could to drum

up leads. >> they are trying to alert the neighborhood and people in the vicinity as to what occurred yesterday. >> authorities will not discuss if the crime was random or if the elderly woman was targeted. it is too early in the investigation for that kind of information. they are urging the public to pass on information. jay korff, abc seven news. >> a southeast dc man is recovering from a gunshot wounds. the shooting happened this afternoon on buena vista terrace. police arrived and found the victim. the man had been shot multiple times. police are still searching for the gunman. police are searching for a man who stabbed to people outside a nightclub called paddy boom boom. of the are expected to survive. police are trying to figure out if the people involved were

inside the nightclub before the stabbing took place. >> a $1 million reward is now being offered for the ex-los angeles police officer suspected of killing three people. the mayor of los angeles announced a reward for christopher dorner. there was extra police protection at the grammy awards tonight in case he tried to strike at a high-profile events like the awards show. police continue to look for him in the mountains west of los angeles -- east of los angeles where his burned-out truck was found last week. two men are being questioned in as people of interest in the deadly shooting of a growth who was killed just days after performing at the presidential inauguration. first lady michelle obama attended her funeral. the men were taken into custody. no charges have been filed. >> the aftermath of the massive blizzard -- 11 deaths are being blamed on the storm. in the meantime airports and public transit up and down the

northeast are slowly coming back online. teeple are trying to dig their way out. many are still without power this evening. there is a new worry in the form of rain that is on the way and could added to roofs already piled high with heavy snow. another update on this story in our next half-hour. first, another case of mother nature's theory -- in mississippi, a tornado has swept through. you can see the twister slowly moving across the city as it moved buildings on the campus of the university of mississippi. police have declared a state of emergency and campus and emergency officials say no deaths have been reported but three people were injured. >> no tornadoes around here but we are in for a bit of a ride. >> could be a very interesting

week from a weather standpoint. let's check in with meteorologist steve rudin. >> about 1.5 inches of snow at reagan national airport. later on this week we could see changes. look at our doppler radar. a few showers to the west of d.c.. they will eventually make their way to the metro area during the early morning hours and will stay with us for the rush-hour commute. temperatures outside of bottoming out pretty early this evening. 39 at dulles. winchester at 39 degrees. temperatures will begin to rise in the morning hours and we will look for temperatures eventually making it into the 50's for the day tomorrow. some storms on the way. wednesday we could be looking at a wintry mix. more on that in just a few

minutes. >> thanks so much. president barack obama will deliver his state of the union address. gun control is one of the issues he's expected to talk about. tom ramsey joins me with what some local people are hoping to hear. >> these are nervous times around the dc area because the looming big budget cuts of the government could hurt the local economy. we asked them, what do you want to hear from the president? after spending time on issues from guns to gay rights to immigration, the president is expected on tuesday night to focus largely on one thing. >> the economy will be central. >> people like lisa claiborne want to hear something that will increase optimism. >> consumer confidence is huge. if people do not feel confident they will not go and buy something. >> the president is expected to talk about the sequestration battle -- across the board cuts

will hit march 1 if he and congress cannot reach a alternative. it will likely hit the dc area harder than anybody -- anywhere else. democrats predict nationwide job losses. >> 600,000 people out of work. this will increase unemployment. >> republicans say across the board may not be the best way but the cuts have to be made. they do not want to hear the president proposed a tax hike to lessen the dollar amount of cuts. >> you cannot in this town every three months raise taxes. >> a local contractor is keeping a close eye on the sequestration issue. >> it has a direct impact. >> linda says the bickering needs to stop. >> nobody is trying to get anything done. they are trying to make their own side look better than the other side. >> there are issues like sequestration and the economy as a whole -- they are expected to be the main thrust of the speech. the president is expected to

someone. >> the university of maryland campus security is tighter tonight. it comes after several brazen robberies on school grounds. >> on a mostly quiet you m.d. -- umd campus, growing concerns about a string of armed robberies the victims all students. >> i have not seen so many robberies in a short stretch. >> the latest incident this past friday. a female student robbed at gunpoint in this parking lot for cash and gift cards. most students are savvy enough to take precautions. >> i look around at my surroundings and try to be aware. >> but that has not stopped other robbers. >> a college campus -- they will hit anyone. >> police have made arrests. three men are in custody after police say they beat and robbed

a man in front of this baltimore avenue café. one man now faces robbery charges, accused of trying to steal a student's laptop. increased campus patrols and a campaign to highlight the location of emergency phones are all part of a heightened campus safety plan. >> patrols or whatever, changing how they go about, more resources, protecting students here. >> students say they appreciate the measures, but authorities say this is also about keeping eyes and ears open. >> one more note from the campus. a woman who told police she was gun that -- robbed at gunpoint earlier this week is under arrest tonight. police say when they looked at surveillance tape from that day, the crime did not take place. she has been charged with making a false statement to a police officer. >> members of the d.c. national

guard are heading out of town. the 372nd military police battalion got a emotional sending off. they will be patrolling a detention center. members have been training for this assignment for more than a year. >> my company commander the police academy, it all prepared be well. >> they will leave on tuesday and will be deployed for 10 months. many of them worked for area police departments and are leaving their families and jobs behind. for some of them this will be the second or third deployment. >> a shooting in the middle of a mardi gras celebration, caught on tape.

at 11:00, on your side. >> the countdown to mardi gras took on a violent turn in new orleans. those were gunshots that you heard their on crowded bourbon street as people gathered to mark the weekend before fat tuesday. a witness to the shooting tapes the incident and handed it to police. four people were injured. three are out of the hospital tonight. investigators say an argument preceded the shooting. they are still looking for three men they say were involved. the people are dead after a helicopter crash in los angeles during a film shoot. it happened around 4:00 this morning at a ranch. police say the ranch was being used as a location for a reality tv show. they are looking into the cause of the crash. >> the family of joe paterno says that the university rushed to judgment in the jerry

sandusky sex abuse case. they released a report performed by a former attorney general -- he said the report diversity report was fundamentally wrong. they blamed paterno and others for covering up sandusky's crimes. they will be talking with haiti court right here tomorrow. -- katie couric right here tomorrow. >> the tornado again -- there was significant damage. there have been no reports of death. we are being told the debris is making it hard for crews to check on everyone. >> the weather in other parts of the country, it looks like we are pretty fortunate here. >> students at the university were on mardi gras break. we have 1.5 inches of snow so

snowpack on the ground. 14 in burlington, vermont. compare that to the 40 degrees at charleston. indianapolis at 50. we will see highs around 55 degrees in the district tomorrow. that will not last very long. the cold front marching its way to the east. showers just on our doorstep will arrive during the early morning hours. good news is temperatures will remain above freezing. anything that falls from the sky across the metro area will fall in the form of rain. to the north of us we may see some freezing rain. that is why we have a freezing rain advisory north of the district and into pennsylvania. the bigger problem tomorrow morning may be areas of dense fog. here is our futurecast as we move through the overnight and into tomorrow. showers will arrive in the
